"Counselling is a wonderful twentieth-century invention.  We live in a complex, busy, changing world.  In this world, there are many different types of experience that are difficult for people to cope with.  Most of the time we get on with life, but sometimes we are stopped in our tracks by an event or situation that we do not, at that moment, have the resources to sort out".  If we cannot find ways to sort this out in our family, with our friends, or with a priest or doctor, etc., then "Counselling is a really useful option at these moments".

John McLeod, An Introduction to Counselling, 2003.

What is Counselling?

I define counselling as an awareness-based creative therapy that creates solutions to problems which are arisen from wrong perceptions. I will explain this definition in detail so you understand it better.

1. It is awareness based

During a counselling session, awareness is the single most important factor of success. The counselling will find place in a silent and comfortable setting. There is the counselor as a skillful listener and the client with a problem to solve. Both need to practice awareness of the mind, emotions and sensations during the session. This helps to establish conscious states of the mind which are able to look beyond the problems into the true nature of ones behaviour and individual reality.

2. It's a creative therapy

Counselling is creative since it uses many tools which create understanding and insight. It creates solutions based on individual preferrences so for the counselor the process is highly creative. He decides, when to use which tools and when not to use them. The client has to establish a creative mind to look at his/her problems from another perspective in order to analyse them properly. A counselor is a person, that helps their clients because of NOT being attached to them in any way (Like family members or friends etc).

3. It creates solutions to problems arisen from wrong perceptions

Most, if not all, of our problems are arisen from thought (mind). we always have the choice how to respond to external situations though. The way we respond often creates conflict, desire or anger which stir up the mind and motivate us to act without control. The resuts of those actions in return will be without control. We were practicing those patterns our whole life so becoming aware and take back the control is quite a process. Finding solutions to harmful patterns takes time, support and consitency. Most of all it needs commitment and the strong wish to overcome ones problems.

What will we do during a therapy session?

First of all I need to listen to you and get an idea of your life, your problems, your wishs and obstacles. While you are telling me these things I listen with awareness and pick up small details that your subconscious mind offers me in the form of bodylanguage, expressions, gestures, wordings, sounds and so forth. I will ask you many questions and listen carefully in order to create a healing profile. The healing is your job however. I will ask the right questions at the right time. My job is to make you think deeper and create tangible insight based upon experience of your problems, their solutions and the way into clarity and liberation from your difficulties. Your part is to be open and aware and analytical during the process.
